Ignorance Is Bliss: Eliminating Ethnic Studies

Ignorance Is Bliss: Eliminating Ethnic Studies

Late April, Arizona’s governor Jan Brewer signed the state’s racial profiling bill into law which orders immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times and requires police to question people if there’s reason to suspect they’re in the United States illegally.

Not even a month has passed and she’s at it again.

Brewer, last Wednesday, signed a bill that targets ethnic studies programs in schools.  The law, which takes effect December 31, would prohibit courses that promote resentment toward one race; that are designed for students of one race; that promote ethnic solidarity “instead of treating students as individuals;” and that encourage “the overthrow of the United States government.”

Overthrow the government?  Seriously?

This is another attempt by conservatives to keep their base as ignorant as possible.  The less they know about Latinos, the more Republican leaders can persuade masses to support legislation that disproportionately targets them.

Based on their ambiguous criteria, any class that mentions, slavery, manifest destiny, small pox, conquistadors, missions, police brutality, apartheid, segregation, lynchings or disproportionate employment could potentially foster “resentment” towards White Americans.

What she essentially wants to do is prohibit any information in her state that would expose the tainted history of this country, especially where it might incite sympathy for minorities.

Without these courses, Arizona voters will not fully understand Latino immigrants, making it easier to dehumanize and discriminate against them.

Please watch the below debate in it’s entirety.

i thought segregation was illegal, not economic segregation of course, but racial segregation. furthermore, won’t this be putting many teachers out of a job?

  • Stark

LMFAO…..I cant read something when THE VERY FIRST SENTENCE IS A LIE LIE LIE LIE

  • Francine

You know don’t you that if you really research this, it shows that she’s trying to be tolerant of everyone not just minorities at the expense of everyone else.

She is trying to eliminate the “Plantation Style” politics that divides us.

  • Robert Buckey

You mean blame whitey studies? Glad they got rid of these courses. Teach history.

  • Mona

WOW maybe white people should stop doing other races so dirty, then none of this would have to happen.

  • JohnCByrdIII

Seriously? Omitting key facts is NOT teaching history! You’re the reason we NEED these courses.

  • http://www.drewerypublishing.com Rodney Drewery

@Robert Buckey: So let me understand. Europeans settle in other lands, systematically eliminate and enslave native inhabitants, enslave another race of people for free labor, exploit resources for profit, and create institutions that preserve their privilege. But you want history taught? Which history?

  • JohnCByrdIII

    @Rodney: PREACH!

  • Gail

Hey let AZ do what they wish. Let them secede! And then make the bastards beg to be let back in the country.

  • Robert Buckey

have you read the AZ bill?

  • Sam

Bobby’s old chestnut: “Have you read the bill?” Stupidity and simple-mindedness at its finest.
It is also your contention that all Chicano/Latino studies are “blame whitey” classes? Wow. How very short-sighted.

  • Leslie (thick Chick #1)

its interesting how the guilty cry the loudest. we seem to be in this pattern of regression right now. its pretty wack. shes obviously very afraid of something.

  • RachelW

No, John Calvin. The purpose of eliminating ethnic studies is that this country was formed as a “melting pot”. Which means once you get here, you ‘blend’ with others to become American. Teaching “ethnic diversity” is the commie’s way of dividing us. E pluribus unum. From many, one. Like it or leave.

  • Natassia

Well, I’m not understanding why we need Chicano/Latino studies.

Do we have “whitey” studies? Do we have WASP studies?

Of course not. Because they would be an unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars. If you want to learn about latin ethnic studies, do it on your own dime through private classes.

  • Robert Buckley

Sam, why is asking if someone has read the bill stupidity and simple-mindedness?

In regards to ethnic studies, let the state schools teach history. If ethnic groups want to teach other members of their ethnic group things that particuarly relate to their group, go for it, just not on my dime, get it?

  • Qiana Byrd

@RachelW, please define “becoming American” I assume you mean becoming white.

  • Qiana Byrd

LOL @Natassia, that’s hysterical! We’ve been force fed “White Studies” from Pre-k through 12th grade and frankly I’m BORED.

  • Mark

If it keep those who do not respect the country out of Arizona, I support her actions. Arrest the illegals and send them to Utah to face old fashion justice.

  • Me

This is a shame. I can’t believe this is even being argued. Its a shame that you can go your entire life and only learn about white ppl & still be successful. Thats NOT history, thats bullshit. I mean white people did all the dirt, so there is NO WAY to cut out “ethnic studies” because white people raped every ethnicity there is. Teach about white people, teach about the good & the bad. What we should be arguing is how can we stop this problem? What can we do to save our children from being brainwashed? How can we encourage young people of different races if they do not get to learn about their own race in SCHOOL not just at home? They need to see themselves in books too! We are ALL important and the truth is the truth, we don’t need to lie to our children. And omission is a form of lying.

  • Adam

all of my higher education has also taught me that deliberate efforts to try and enforce ethnic diversity increases animosity between people. The left is too busy loving the smell of their own farts to realize they went about it wrong.

  • Miranda Bowden

I can honestly say this topic is DEPLORABLE!!!! The fact that we have a politician (who is supposed to be representing the people) signing into law that a STATE can no longer teach ethnic studies or diversity when we as AMERICANS are made up of millions of different ethnicities is just disgusting. Telling the truth is not a matter of fact in this country, and so many things have been swept under a rug but when you try to cut out a whole piece of history, OUR HISTORY then you are doing damage to all who reside within this country. We can, at the least, pretend that others matter and not be so shortsighted to think that what they or us have experienced isn’t as important to the makeup of our history. She as one woman shouldn’t get to decide what is told! Again…DISGUSTING!

  • Brandon

I’ve heard her speak. Arizona is a hot ass mess. Her, McCain, Sherriff Arpaio – Arizona is like the Mississippi of the west, no joke. Oh and btw, it is also legal to carry a concealed weapon WITHOUT a permit here. Gotta love that shyt!

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf Tresa Lovern

Once again, some contiue to remain uninformed. The lack of education in this country is appalling. It’s okay, it’s as important to find out what you don’t be like as what you do.

  • Jim Batchelor

Good for AZ. Ethnic studies are racist.

  • Rob Carlberg

What a steaming heap of trash the SicklyCat is altogether. Man they really hate it when the country stands up for itself.

  • Miya

LOL! Wow, are u freakin’ kidding me!?? It never fails with these crazies. The sad part it, it will be become a war of words and ideologies…They are terrified and desperate to maintain white solidarity. SMH

  • Sarah (Thick Chick #2)

@ Natasha… of COURSE we have “whitey” studies! Its called US history! Not sure if you’ve opened up an old ass high school text book lately (which public schools are still using) but they are still tooting the B.S. story of Christopher Columbus “discovering America” and other white stories! The point of recording and teaching history is so that (hopefully) the bad parts aren’t repeated, and the good things & accomplishments can be celebrated. America IS a melting pot & what makes it beautiful is all the cultures bringing a little bit of who they are to the table!

The purpose in teaching ethnic diversity is NOT to divide, but rather to help others understand. You do not need to be Chicano/Latino to take a class about their history, classes are open to anyone who is interested in becoming less ignorant about other races and cultures. American history includes an array of things from its Native American roots to slavery, to civil war, immigration from many different countries, civil rights movements etc… America is a sum of all these parts & to leave pieces out (such as Latino studies) is to ignore a piece of what America is and was founded upon.

@RachelW … you mention this “melting pot” until we ALL look and are treated the same, we are more like a stew with different, identifiable chunks than a pot of some melted substance. To be American is to be a part of and to understand all of the events that make America what it is today, which include stories and events from all of these different cultures. If anything I think we need MORE “ethnic” studies classes & to start them at a younger age so children can celebrate and respect one another’s differences and learn to be more tolerant.

The simple fact is that single classes are too short to contain an all-inclusive view of American history, so it’s necessary to break classes up into smaller more concentrated parts (just like any other study) in order to get a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter

That’s enough of my mumbo jumbo, I’m gonna go eat a Twix. xoxo

  • joleezy

LOL Sarah i almost typed the EXACT same thing. Whitey studies= US History. There definitely is a need for ethnic studies programs since most of the “ethnic” peoples contributions to american history and enterprise are systematically eliminated from the history books…how do you have a US history without mention of slavery, an uprisings, segregation ect. How are they going to explain why there was a civil war? How do they explain how texas and california were acquired as states?…HILARIOUS and scary…

furthermore there wouldnt be a need for black history month or latino heritage month if our histories were included when teaching american history. This type of devisiveness directly proves WHY these studies are needed.

  • http://www.twitter.com/aroseo925 Alissa

EVERY history class not delineated specifically towards a specific ethnicity is “whitey” history. The disparity between things I have learned in college versus in high school is disgusting… we idolize Margaret Sanger for her “invention” and “advocacy” of birth control– as Hitler cites her and her eugenics work at wiping out our socially constructed minorities. People NEED to be aware of this. As a WHITE female– I acknowledge the wrong-doings committed by people of my color, and am working to correct them, as they are polluting my world and the freedoms of those close to me.

  • Sarah (Thick Chick #2)

P.S. I’m as white as they come. OK, bye.

we need ethnic studies as well as credit courses taught in conjunction with sex ed… they dont want us pregnant but they deal with our bad credit and misunderstanding of one another. they being “the man” whoever he is with his evil gaze and stern lips. “im scared”

  • Junee

Until “US” history includes ALL history, we need these classes, PERIOD! Also, ANY student can take theses courses, you don’t have to be asian to take an asian studies course. AZ is so backwards on so many things.

What they really don’t want people to know is the true history. That America should be called the Indigenous States of Meso America & the truth is that Native Americans were here for Thousands of years inhabiting the Americas way before they even arrived as illegal aliens to the Indigenous States of Meso America. u00a0Another fact is that many Native Americans were a nomadic people who would actually migrate to different places.nnThe Spanish found the Western world in 1492 & their mission was to add loyal substitutes for Spain & also convert the indigenous people tou00a0Christianity Roman Catholicism to exact. Unfortunately a large percentage died of diseases brought over by the Europeans like Small pox & flu that the indigenous immunity system had no defense for. The reason so many indigenous speak Spanish is because Spanish was the first European language brought to the Americas. The Spanish had founded many missions & cities in states Arizona, California, Texas, Florida, and New Mexico. Plus Mexico, Central America, & a majority of South America.u00a0nnThe English first colony was in 1607 and many English colonist were having a tough time learning to survive in the new world. The Native Americans actually taught the colonist to survive & how did they get payed back.nnThey took their lands.u00a0nSent them to reservationsngot labeled as savagesnthe list goes on and on.nnNow Arizona which was home to many indigenous brown people is being taken overnby what you could call real illegal citizens who have a racist agenda. It is incredible theu00a0hypocritical action the state has implemented on the brown people of the Americas. I mean I guess the agenda is not over of destroying the natives. I mean how do u come to someones land take it over and then kick them out. It is crazy. 10,000 years just look up all the brown people tibes that lived in Arizona way b4 Nazi Jan Brewer got there. Of course they don’t want them to know these history because many whites believe in Justice & don’t want to be labeled as hypocrites. Many want to be fair to other human begins. I mean this is why we fought the civil war after all for fairness & equality.u00a0nnhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigenous_peoples_in_Arizonau00a0nnnThe crazy thing is that many people that are brown or darker complected are found in areas with a hot climate to help them defend against skin cancer yet Arizonans want to discriminate against darker complected people in that region. If only brown people had a border patrol and were much more advanced they could have told the Mayflower sorry this land is already occupied & you are illegal to this country. Please turn back or we will have to deport you back to England. LOL
