Rand Paul on Civil Rights

Posted on 21. May, 2010 by JohnCByrdIII in Politics

Rand Paul on Civil Rights

Tea Party front man Rand Paul, son of Texas Congressman Ron Paul has easily defeated establishment pick Trey Grayson for the Republican Senate nomination in Kentucky.

This amazing accomplishment is being overshadowed by his recent comments on the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Without going into detail, let me bullet-point his stance on desegregation.

  • Public entities should not be able to discriminate on the base of race, sex or sexual orientation.
  • Private entities (that get no federal funding) should not be prohibited from discriminating.

Despite his inarticulacy, I understand what he is trying to say.

He feels that private businesses should be able to operate in whatever way they see fit without the interference from the government.

He likened it unto a restaurant owner having the right to tell someone that they cannot bring a weapon into their establishment.  According to him, if you have the right to tell someone that they can’t bring a weapon, you have the right to tell them that you can’t bring an Asian!

The problem with his philosophies is that businesses large and small have a history of abusing that freedom at the expense of those who are not in the position to fight.

In the 1960’s, most Southern businesses and local governments were run by hillbilly racists like Tim James.  Blacks were not allowed to swim in pools, go to school or eat at counters with Whites by decree.  The list goes on, but you already know this.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 (that Paul would have voted against) did two things:

1. Overturned the Jim Crow Laws that mandated segregation.

2. Prohibited both public and private entities from discriminating on the basis of race.

As we saw with the economic meltdown, unregulated industry leads to disaster!

We can’t afford to have someone like Paul in Washington.

Support Democrat Jack Conway in Kentucky!

Please watch how Rand Paul avoids answering direct questions in the following clip.  AWKWARD!

should you be regulated to NOT have the right to boycott such businesses?

  • SWill

I agree. For instance the BET channel should not have to broadcast NASCAR races.

  • Donna

I guess you haven’t seen the true version.

  • Jim B

I find it interesting that there’s BET but if we created a white channel, we’d be called racist.

  • Donna

You know we would be, Jim. And, soon we’ll be the only country with a United Negro College fund and a Caucasian only tanner tax. Heh, and we’re the racists.

  • http://www.828Entertainment.com JohnCByrdIII

No, actually you wouldn’t. I don’t think he’s a racist, I think his policies allow for racism.

  • Robert E

I think that Federal authorities should not FORCE black people or anyone to patronize a business. (or FORCE individuals to purchase a product from a private entity). Dems don’t believe that.
The ’64 mandates were attempting to UNDO the INSTUITUTIONALIZED racism of Democrat’s Jim Crow LAWS.

  • SWill

Private entities can turn away business from anyone…what’s your point?

  • Todd

John, are you going to address my question?…Where does individual freedom end and gov. regulation begin? Who gets to dicatte the morality of the world?

  • Dayton

It’s about states rights you fool. Discrimination at state level needs to be solved at state level. Federal gov’t has no place in these affairs.

  • JohnCByrdIII

@ Todd: I bet you like to regulate the morality of gays. Republicans are hypocrites!

  • Cassandra Ortiz

God I have to admire this man for his honesty. He really got himself into a hornets nest. Most people will not understand his Libertarian principles.

  • Marc

CaSandra, I can’t believe you respect his honesty? You claim you are hispanic yet you support Rand Paul and you also support the AZ bill. I’m not getting your right now!

  • SWill

Are you implying you have a right to walk into any privately owned business? What about the business owner’s right to turn away people? Who’s rights were infringed? Joe Public or the owner?

  • Jim B

Yes Marc, you can’t understand why someone would want what’s best for the country instead of screaming “What about me?”

  • SWill

So Marc, you think Casandra should be racist since she’s hispanic?

  • Karen

Why would we want to go backwards in this country instead of forward?

  • Jim B

The federal government has no constitutional authority to demand that a private business service anyone for any reason.

  • Todd L

    nice try John…
    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/plum-line/2010/05/rand_paul_spox_fed_govt_should.html

any more ‘race baiting’ articles for us to smash this morning?

  • JohnCByrdIII

I don’t respect him changing stance just because his campaign manager thinks he should.

  • Chris

It seems clear that he is indicating that the provision in question is far more reaching than only racial discrimination. To discount all other aspects of how private business could have to respond to mandates of federal control would not be prudent. He said on many occasions that he absolutely does not support or participate with people that act in a racist fashion. I think it shows a lot about his character to actually want to define ALL provisions to support it.

  • Todd L

thats fine if you dont respect him.. thats your choice. But the media is trying to make him say something that they can use against him because the biggest powers in this country are against him…. Rand Paul would fight for your Liberties more than any other candidate out there…

it is not black against white… or left against right… its Tyranny against Freedom and this is going to be a crazy fight man..

  • Adam

hahahaha its not changing stance its elaborating so the zombies don’t try and play semantics and run away with something they can skew. good try though john.

  • Donna

All of mankind are hypocrites at one time or another, John. It’s human nature. You are profiling and covering one party with a blanket statement, when in fact, both parties are in bed together. Parties and races are not the issue, a BIG corrupt government is. All this race bating being done by this administration and its supporters is sickening.

  • Tresa

Rand Paul has the car in reverse! I prefer drive as in forward. This guy is so stuck, there’s gum on his brown shoes.

  • Dott Allen

the words came out of his mouth no bating there FACT

  • Todd S

John I’m FAR from a republican nor do I buy into the 2 party BS. For your information, I have the same view of gay “rights” as I do for the drug war. NONE OF THE GOVERNMENTS GOD DAMN BUSINESS. …..keep making presumptions, you have not gotten any right yet.

  • Sheila Nugent

On this flap with the Civil Rights Act – Stand with Rand, y’all. That’s right, he’s not a career politician and he’s learning the game. That’s okay. We know who he is. We know he’s not a racist, like we know that we are not. He’s a good man. We also know he thinks things through in terms of the Constitution, and out of respect for just how important it is, he is careful about precedents and unintended consequences. He will think things through, and not just make decisions based on surface appearances, and he will do what’s right after careful deliberation. We KNOW he’ll stand with us, We the People (unlike Scott Brown the Politician).

Of *course* a principled man will first think of an issue in terms of his principles, and then will consider the reality of the world when deciding how to act. What’s happened here is that he was asked to give an on-the-spot opinion on something which he probably hadn’t seen a need to think about because the question had been settled for so long, and because he doesn’t have a racist bone in his body – and he answered on-the-spot according to basic Constitutional principles without the chance for deliberation. Those are the principles that he will defend instinctively, but he will also deliberate and vote carefully, based on reality, not on political games and appearances.

  • Todd S

John is doing what he does best… ‘Race Baiting’… got anything else??

  • Jill

Pointing out racism isn’t race baiting. Its being honest and confronting reality.

  • Todd S

The race card always comes out when when one lacks an intelligent rebuttal!

  • Jill

Denying racism always comes out when one is racist.

  • Clarke

Not going far enough. The federal government , which is basicaly a collection of self serving collectivist mentality dick heads HAVE NO BUSINESS MEDLING IN THE AFFAIRS OF PRIVATE ENTITIES ON ANY BASIS WHATSOEVER. Let freedom run free

  • http://www.SicklyCat.com JohnCByrdIII

I’m confused how the government can be vilified for ensuring equality for all races.

  • Simon

Should there be a law that says you cannot boycott any business since you’d be discriminating against it?

  • JoannaD

Rand Paul: the best thing to happen to the Democratic Party in months. What a tool.

  • Arthur Mano

Nothing but ignorant morons here. OPEN YOUR EYES JOANNNA AND KAREN, THERE IS A WORLD GOING ON OUTSIDE!!!!!

  • Kevin Sandage

I bet John Calvin Byrd is on Welfare and gets free healthcare, food stamps and is one of the rebel rousers you see hat the court house yelling “Wheres my money, Give me my money” Freakin free-loader! Typical Sharpton like response “Racism” Your the racist JCB III!

  • Tamu

The more Rand talks, the bigger the victory for the democrats.

  • Doby

Thats pretty shortsighted. The history of the south is one that is embroiled in racist beliefs that hide behind “states rights” (which itself is rooted in racism) and Paul’s beliefs here are no different. Basically, the guy is completely full of crap. There is definitely racist intent behind it. Besides….

If there is a town with a private owned pool, private owned restaurants, private owned supermarkets, parks, playgrounds etc, and all of the owners decide “we dont want…..white people(for sake of argument) to use any of this stuff” – and you lived in that town, how would u feel? should THAT be legal? Because that is what Paul is talking about. Towns could become segregated legally by making people uncomfortable with the lack of GOOD options.

  • Junee

    Republicans are hypocrits
