Free E-Funny Not, Suitable for Softies
Olivia Christian is the founder and creator of CrassECards.com, a sarcastic, funny and FREE e-card website that launched in March of this year. SicklyCat recently sat down with Olivia to get a glimpse into the mind behind this fast growing comedy site.
SC: So when did you come up with the idea to start this website?
OC: It was right before Christmas, this past Christmas 2009. I purchased the movie “500 Days of Summer” on DVD. I didn’t see it in theatres but I had heard it was good. So on the back of the DVD the plot of the movie is described and it said that the lead male character worked at a greeting card company. Right then I thought, I could write greeting cards. I don’t know why that thought came to me. I clearly have an overly confident opinion of myself. But anyway, I grabbed my laptop and started writing. But everything I wrote was kinda mean and sarcastic. But the “greetings” also came out so quickly and easily. I was just sitting there cracking myself up. But I knew if I am going to pursue this it was going to have to be like an alternative to the warm and fuzzy greeting card lines. There was no way Hallmark would hire me to write this stuff. The next day I emailed a sample of the more than 200 jokes I had written the night before to some friends and all of my siblings and they all loved them. My brother in-law said that I had found my calling. So CrassECards.com, the idea, the name, everything came to me in one lonely, DVD for one night.
SC: But you’re not a web developer so how’d you get the jokes online?
OC: My dad and my brother in-law are both web geniuses who donated their time to me. They both have full-time day jobs and are super busy so they did their best by me when they could. The site is a work in progress, but the funny is there and it’s growing. I’m hoping to find a co-founder out there who can step in and handle the technical side of things while I work on the funny.
SC: So give us some examples of your favorite e-cards
OS: Oh gosh, that’s hard. Ok I’ll give you a few from different categories. Remember, these cards are for people who have a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. People who like Family Guy and 30Rock and Arrested Development will like these cards. So, one of my favorite birthday cards is “Do something different for your birthday. Like save it for the second date.”
SC: Wow.
OC: I’m going to take that wow as laughter! My favorite one for someone who’s having a baby is, “They say a baby change your life forever. And if you’re less than 24 weeks you can still change your mind.” And one of my favorite engagement card is “You’re engaged? Does an e-girlfriend get an e-engagement ring?”
SC: Ok, so I get while they’re called crass e-cards.
OS: Exactly. CrassECards.com has e-cards for nearly every occasion other people force us to recognize but it allows us to recognize it in a really funny way.
SC: And they are really funny. Even if you don’t have a reason to send an e-card, this is a great site to procrastinate on while you’re at work.
OS: Or while you’re waiting for the results of an STD test. And we’re on Twitter and Facebook so there are hourly doses of crass humor going out to our fans so people should check that out too.
