Boycott Target!

Posted on 03. Aug, 2010 by JohnCByrdIII in Politics

Boycott Target!

Target, the retail giant, just became one of the very first companies to take advantage of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision allowing unlimited corporate cash in elections.

Target has spent over $150,000 in the Minnesota Governor’s race backing state Rep. Tom Emmer, a far-right Republican who supports Arizona’s immigration law, wants to abolish the minimum wage and even gave money to a fringe group that condoned the execution of gay people.

That’s bad enough. But the stakes are much higher than one candidate and one company. If we don’t push back hard, this will just be the tip of the iceberg. Other corporations will learn that they can pour money into elections to buy the outcome they want. So we’re sending a message to Target’s CEO that we won’t shop there if Target continues spending money on elections.

Target must think customers won’t care. They’re wrong: We do care, and we need to let them know that we want Target—and all corporations—out of our elections.

Send a message to Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel telling him that you’re not going to shop at Target unless they stop trying to buy elections! Add your name to the petition.

Since I’ve already started boycotting Walmart due to their stance on medical marijuana use, this Target boycott leaves me with no place to buy all my electronics, socks & “draws”.

But honestly, we need to do more than just sign a petition!  We need to immediately stop supporting Target and all other corporations that interfere with politics and trade money for congressional favors that are against the best interest of Americans.

Join SicklyCat.com in immediately boycotting Target and it’s subsidiaries.

Leave a comment below and let us know what you think.

I’d stop shopping at Wal-Mart way before I stopped shopping at Target. Good article though. I love Target. I love the ambient lighting in the store, the overwhelming selection of merchandise, the low price guarantee and the convenience. I’m sorry I’m such a slave. BTW: You can always shop at the Slauson to buy your sox draws and electrodes.

  • http://www.SicklyCat.com JohnCByrdIII

Target is my favorite place to shop too, but I can’t let my money be used for the Republican agenda of terrorizing minorities and the poor all over the world for the benefit of the rich.

  • Leslie (thick Chick #1)

so what do you suggest we do? simply wholesome really marks their products up.

  • http://www.SicklyCat.com JohnCByrdIII

Well, if you support the boycott, Target will fold and stop buying congressmen. Then we can shop there again. If done right, it’s a short painless process.

  • Kymberli Hall

So, I can’t shop at Wal-Mart, I can’t shop at Target and I’m not going to Slauson for the things I run to Target for..so, someone needs to provide suggestions for a back-up store that we can shop at. Pronto! I need to get to a Target-like store by tomorrow.

This is ridiculous! This is yet another example of Corporations trying to decide our leaders. I don’t understand why the Surpreme Court voted in favor of this. As much as people talk about Government getting out of people’s lives I hear little to nothing from politician, especially on the right, about regulating corporations. It’s like having a dog and not having a leash on him. This is the free-market being abused and we must show Target that we won’t support them if the CEO wants to favor politicians.

  • JeffL

The Supreme Court made this legal, and you’re mad at Target? Corporations have always supported candidates, and lobbied congressmen. Now they have made those funds UNLIMITED and legal.

If they were supporting a Democrat Governor would you be singing a different tune?

The problem I see is the government allowing themselves to be bought out by the corporations.

By all means, support the little guy and shop else were. And write your local representative. I don’t have any Targets in my district, but you may.

  • Qiana

We’re not boycotting Target because they’re supporting a republican candidate. We’re boycotting Target because they’re supporting a dumb ass racist candidate who makes decisions that we don’t agree with. There are dumb ass Democratic candi…dates, like Blanche Lincoln, that I would gladly boycott Target for supporting.

Of course we’re mad at Target. They don’t have to participate in the politics game just because the supreme court said they could. If they want to vote with their dollars then so will I.

I read this book I thought was funny once called Skinny Bitch. It was a total vegan manifesto to which I think is silly, but what I did appreciate is that after they got people riled up they offered solutions… Like if you’re ready to give up a diet of partially hydrogenated oils and genetically modified fruits veggies and meats than shop here here and here. It would be nice if you can provide a list of stores we can all navigate to as an alternative to Target. A place where workers are treated fairly. ooops so I guess Wal-Mart is out or where slave and child labor isnt ignored… ooops I guess the swap meet and all its trinkets wont suffice or where price fixing to gouge consumers is frowned upon… that excludes all federated department stores i.e. dillards, bloomingdales, macys etc. Offer some alternatives if you are going to get folks riled up is all Im saying or we just become a group of whining suckas who buy everything at the liquor store for 12 times what is should cost. Then where does it stop? I totally see why people join cults and move to Guyana to drink Jim Jones juice and kill themselves. If you peep one scene you gotta peep em all… We are all just tryna live. If you are going to be the cab driver you gotta have the best route or everybody is gonna be lost…

    @Leslie:
OK. Here’s what I see as the flaw in your logic. Why must a solution be presented for a problem to be identified and/or addressed?

Did Frederick Douglas need to have an alternative to slavery before he became a proponent of abolition?

Maybe what we need is for people to just boycott Target, Walmart and any other corporation that doesn’t behave the way we believe to be right.

If Target was sacrificing babies in their stock room, would you still be looking for an alternative before you boycott? Of course not.

The real question is, “Why isn’t this issue important to you?”

  • Leslie (thick Chick #1)

Have you seen idiocracy? do you understand the society we live in? im giving you

  • Leslie (thick Chick #1)

an oportunity to lead here… If you are going to present a problem ask people to step up than offer a damn ladder. Its easy as information.

  • Leslie (thick Chick #1)

and Target is not sacraficing babies they are alligned with people I dont agree with but California is run by people I dont agree with shit this country and planet in general are run by folks I dotn agree or align myself with- so what do I do move to Mars? Cus after Target publically agrees to stop supporting the cadidate they will privately dump money into him. We live in a society where being pseudo and semi is good enough and it aches me… I get what you’re saying and I smell what your stepping in, but I ask you to take it one step further and you get all taltented tenth on me. You have the forum-you addressed the topic- you know the financial position of most of the people are acquainted with-you realize how convenient Target really is. yet you’re entirely cerebral about this. We are talking 2 pay chex from dirt poor ass people here who depend on the low prices and product offerings. speak their language. Offer some damn alternatives.

  • Leslie (thick Chick #1)

Sacraficing babies? That’s China and I know you dont have a single thing in your house that was made in China now do you?

  • Qiana

    99 cent store. The End.

  • Jason

How is this any different than unions of public corporations donating millions of dollars to liberal canidates? Would you be complaining if Target donated to a pro gay marriage pro illegal immigrant canidate?

  • http://livebetterwithouttarget.blogspot.com/ Kristine

I’ve started a blog about great places to shop in the Twin Cities and how much fun it is to not shop at Target. http://livebetterwithouttarget.blogspot.com/

  • JB

I love Target even more!! Good for them for sticking to what they believe is right. I’m going to Target today and I will try to spend more. No one else should dictate how a company decides to spend their profits.
