Illegal Citizens: Republicans Aim to Repeal 14th Amendment
Posted on 04. Aug, 2010 by JohnCByrdIII in Politics
Republican leaders are pushing to repeal the 14th constitutional amendment that grants automatic citizenship to anyone born in the United States.
The GOP is targeting domestically born children of illegal immigrants. Estimates are that out of 10.8 million illegal immigrants in the United States, 3.8 million have children who are U.S. citizens. These young citizens could possibly grow up to vote against the conservative machine. Republicans aren’t going to sit back and let that happen without a fight.
Among the proponents of this motion is Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, 2008 Republican Presidential candidate John McCain, Jon Kyl, Lindsey Graham and Jeff Sessions.
In an attempt to qualify his position, Sessions stated yesterday “I’m not sure exactly what the drafters of the (14th) amendment had in mind, but I doubt it was that somebody could fly in from Brazil, have a child and fly back home with that child, and that child is forever an American citizen.”
Honestly Sessions, I don’t give a damn what the intentions of our founding fathers were. Why do we act as if they were infallible?
You want to overturn the 14th Amendment? Ok. Let’s deny the citizenship of all foreign born children of U.S. citizens including those of military serving abroad. Let’s make them stand in line. Think that they’ll go for that?
In reality, this will probably never happen. Repealing the citizenship right can be done only through constitutional amendment, which would require approval by two-thirds majorities in both chambers of Congress and by three-fourths of the states. Republicans need a massive victory in 2012 to have enough demons in office to vote this through.
What amazes me is that the right has the audacity to propose such a ridiculous repeal without expecting any backlash from the smarter half of the country! It’s time for liberals to stop ignoring the rise of the Racist Tea Party and plan to take even more seats from the conservative machine in 2012!
This election couldn’t be more important.
