Young Expat: My New Direction
Posted on 17. Aug, 2010 by DrWayneByrd in Travel
Since YoungExpat.com was launched, our intention was first to discuss my reasoning for deciding to live outside the United States, and then to chronicle my experiences. After my short time living in Central America, I have returned to the states with an altered perspective, which in turn has altered the direction of YoungExpat.com.
While trying to craft an existence in Central America I encountered a problem common to most young travelers, the problem of trying to generate an income while on the road. The travelers from the US generally fit into one of three financial categories.
The first group of travelers were people that had saved up enough money to last in the region for a specific amount of time, and were trying to enjoy themselves while the clock ticked mildly in the back of their minds. While this group didn’t have to worry about working while on the road, they often ran out of money before they actually wanted to leave the country. They had to face the impending reality of having to sever precious relationships and end their exploration when their set amount of savings ran out.
The second group of travelers had very little money saved and were frantically searching for jobs in the local economy while the clock thundered in the forefront of their minds. For those who actually found work, they had to dramatically reduce their time spent exploring in order to earn an income that afforded them a very basic lifestyle.
Now the third group of travelers had a completely different experience than the first two groups. This third group never worried about finding a job in the local economy and never worried about having to uproot when their savings ran out. This group was able to find and follow passion without time or monetary restriction. They were living the expat life of my dreams while I was wasting time “making a living.”
If you are anything like me, you want to know how they were able to live abroad with such freedom. The answer lies within these two words, “Passive Income.” Passive Income is defined as an income received on a regular basis, with little effort required to maintain it. The travelers that had amassed passive income were free to spend the majority of their time, effort and energy exploring and engaging in passionate endeavors.
Most of the third group of travelers were retired folks with passive income coming in the form of retirement insurance or social security. They had spent the best years of their lives working for traditional income, “making a living,” waiting for old age when they would get to finally live fully.
The rest of the third group of travelers were young people who had made the opposite decision and were living fully now. While some of these young people were earning passive income from real estate holdings or from investments of some sort, the majority of them were generating passive income online. They had found ways to build businesses online that took very little maintenance and generated lots of passive income. Even when they did need to work on their businesses, they could do so at the beach bar with a WIFI connection!
They had true Existence Freedom, the freedom to do what they wanted, whenever they wanted, wherever they wanted! I vowed at that moment to earn the same Existence Freedom as well. I am committed now to not only having the Existence Freedom that I observed with that group of young travelers, but to help others to have it as well.
So…. I am dedicating YoungExpat.com to exposing people who are passionate about travel, to the life changing opportunity to do so supported by passive income. I will not only focus on the beauty of spending time abroad, but will begin to offer information about how to earn passive income online.
