Hate to say it but the structure & rules set by teacher unions are a HUGE part of why our schools suck so bad. Tenure is a mofo! Where else on earth can you keep your job when you are doing a shitty job at it! Teachers are pivotal in shaping children for what they will become. They should be held to a higher standard & PAID to do so.
Teachers are NOT the problem in most instances!!! The implications for reform are evident; however, all parties (involved directly and indirectly with education) must be held accountable (i.e. Federal/state/local govt., districts, upper admin, school admin, teachers, PARENTS, local communities…)!
There’s an article in TIME magazine about this documentary. I always felt that I had the most awesome teachers at Uni High but there was a lot lacking at home. Mainly interest & support =/
Need to see the movie but I think you’re just tired.
Taking away tenure along with extended school days and years is not the answer. Its throwing the baby out with the bath water. Tenure is one of the major reasons Career teachers teach while the teach for america transients talk revolution all the way to another profession.
America, we used to be able to think for ourselves. Now all you have to do to brainwash a few million people is post something clever on youtube and everybody’s supermaning. (NO SOLIDERBOY). The movies a nice depiction and emotionally gripping but its about the money. Not the students.
Vote for the bill when they create it and you will see just in time for your children to get schooled. That goes for everyone but what so I know. I’ve just been a teacher in the ghetto for 11 years. This kind of push hurts great and horrible teachers alike. Find another way that doesn’t involve taking away tenure because I assure you this will blow up in your face.
How about holding parents accountable?
This is NO way to hold parent accountable. We have to focus on what we CAN fix.
SOUL, I agree with you, but I think that tenure should be earned like in any other profession.
Also, the movie doesn’t vilify ALL public teachers, like the naysayers try to portray. It vilifies the UNION
Parents are the problem. Its not always there fault…they are uneducated about how to parent their child to be successful in school, such as checking homework, good attendance, attend parent-teacher conferences, have discussions about school. I think a real solution would be for educators to educate the parents on how to support their children in being successful in school. Maybe start in pre-k and give mandatory courses in low SES school from grades k through 12…every year!
