The Income Disparity Among African-Americans: We Ain’t Ballin’

The Income Disparity Among African-Americans: We Ain’t Ballin’

Last year, I did an article titled, ‘Combating the Poverty Crisis in Black America’, where I used many of the same Census Data that was cited in the article Mother Jones article on the Income Disparity in America. After reading that article I decided to crunch those numbers even further and create similar charts for African Americans.

Below is a chart, using the same data, to show how the income disparity looks just among African Americans.

The fact that the average income for 90% of African American is just slightly above the poverty line is simply appalling.

This income disparity among African Americans should be a wake up call. While, the rest of America has toned down and become more realistic about their reduced incomes, many of us seem to continue to be lost in the illusion of being rich. We are not. Based on this data, many of us are living lies. The Average African can not truly afford the lifestyles that we lead.

Let me give you an example. The average luxury car costs around $65,000. If you were to buy or lease, the cost with insurance, depending on credit would be around $1,000 per month. Rule of thumb, is that the price of your car should be roughly 25% of your income. In other words, you should at least $48,000 per year to drive a $65,000 car. According to the Census data, 60% of us can not afford it. Still how many of such cars do we see in our communities?

When you add the impact that mass unemployment, foreclosure and the overexposure to payday loans has had on our total net worth in recent years, you can see how the average income for 90% of us may fall even further.

Many African Americans, believe that having it, means that you can afford it. But, as we see from the data above, this is not true for many of us. Instead of that mentality, we need to develop one that says ‘not having doesn’t mean that you can’t afford it.’ We need to save and live more within our means. What we save could save us.

    Great article.

I agree with the general sentiment of the article, in the sense that many Blacks do live beyond their means.

However, I think it’s also important to acknowledge that true to our numinous dual existence in America, we also do NOT report all of our income for any gov’t agency to see. So sometimes the fancy car is bought by legitimate or illegitimate gains, but all off the books. Of course, the question still stands of what best to do with the money. Likewise, what about those who are on the books and still below the poverty levels? That’s what I took to be the main inspired point of your article.

Great post! I think what really needs to be examined is WHY we succumb to the ‘i have it therefore i can afford it’ mentality. are we overcompensating for the fact that many of us grow up not having “nice things”? Once we get a little bit of money it is almost too easy to fall into the trap of “let’s buy nice things that we didn’t have access to growing up”….there’s a word for this phenomenon but I can’t remember what it is.

Suggested Edit: In order to drive a 48k car, you need to make at least 65k… you have it the other way around. Also, 25% of 65 is 16.25.. I believe you mean to put 75%. The maximum price of a car you can afford is 75% of your income. Just a helpful edit.

We do live beyond our means and will take a lot to readjust our thinking. The worst part is that way too many live below the poverty line.

I strongly suspect that neither political party really knows what to do regarding the economy, nor do the experts, although they have opinions and theories. The problem is simply too large, complex, and interconnected with economies of other nations, over which the US has no control.
To fix most things in the universe, you have to get them to “sit still” at least for a short period of time, and suspend those outside factors bearing on the problem. This is a dynamic situation. If we as a society actually knew what worked, and could establish a cause and effect relationship with any certainty, we would have done it by now.
Is it possible, as postulated by some, that the liberal, conservative, progressive, corporate and banking interests, and libertarian POWER FORCES in our society are laughing all the way to the bank, and that we minions with little money and power are the ones complaining? And that because of new technological advances in communication and the power of the Internet, the voice of the minions is now being disseminated with greater force, essentially saying, “Stop! Enough is enough!”?
Furthermore, is this a case of the minions fighting for limited scraps at the bottom of the heap, while the real riches are controlled by a few? Have we at the bottom been pitted against one another?

  • Just a Thought

Living above one’s means is NOT just an African-American problem, it is an American one. Addressing spending above our means without mention of the disparity in unemployment and underemployment rate for African Americans, does this topic a huge disservice. Further, you fail to mention the historical factors contributing to how and why Blacks spend the way we do. Next time please write an article on why 90% of Blacks average income is just above the poverty line in 2011, in the “greatest” nation in the world. The self-accountability meme written by a lot of you Negroes is getting rather tired.

    WONDERFUL Post.

If you make 50k and have a 65K car you’re already headed in the wrong direction. n

  • Bmccrack7

Would you rather no one say anything and we continue to live a lie. “Historical reasons” is a cop out to continue to make excuses to why we buy what we know we can’t afford.

  • Bmccrack7

Incorrect, a max 75% of your income to put toward a  car is insanity.(25% is reasonable) …… He/She who wrote this article stated that if you make $48,000.00 a year, which would mean 48/12 = $4,000.00/mo; in which 1,000/mo payment (lease) for 65,000.00 car is 25% of your monthly income.  Note $1,000/$4,000 = 0.25
