Deadliest Snatch: Black Women & Abortion (VIDEO)

Deadliest Snatch: Black Women & Abortion (VIDEO)

A few nights ago, while my pregnant wife soundly slept next to me, I caught a segment of the Daily Show. (She falls asleep at 8p now, so my nights are pretty uneventful).

While watching the below clip, I really started to vet my beliefs on abortion, particularly as it applies to the Black community.

I’m a bit of an paradox.  I come from a highly religious Christian family.  My father, uncles & grandfather were/are all preachers.  They, however, are also highly progressive.

So while I was taught that abortion & homosexuality was wrong in God’s eyes, I was also taught that God gives everyone the right to make bad decisions.  Mandated morality is the first step towards a police state.

Driving around Los Angeles although, I see billboards popping up with a slightly different take on this debate.  They argue that Black women have abortions at such high rates that Black children can potentially become an “endangered species”.

And although I am not the biggest fan of abortion, I’m angered at this attempt to guilt mothers into a political ideology that limits the liberties of women.

In the following clip, Rick Santorum of Fox News states that the Black Community would be double what it is today if it were not for abortion.  What’s ironic about statements like this is that the same pundits that vilify social welfare, want to double the size of a systematically impoverished people.

Take a look at the following clip and give me your opinions on these ads popping up in inner cities across America.

*laughing so hard I can’t breathe* Love it. The logical conclusion to this horrific ad campaign!

  • Miranda Bowden

    DIS-GUST-ED!!!!!

  • Ralph

then why isn’t murder legal, I would think that would qualify as a bad decision

  • Gabby

Trying to instill adult sensibility & respoinsibility in youth is clearly a difficult thing. Taking away accessibility to contraception & healthcare is just a terrible idea. Almost to the barbaric. People have to stay real about human biology.

  • http://www.SicklyCat.com JohnCByrdIII

@Ralph: Good point. But don’t you think that the opinion that the unborn child is a “person” with inalienable “rights” is a moral position?

  • Frooty Sparklez

Churches are built every where through out America while paganism runs wild eroding the nation…

  • ASHLEY

Shocked!! I have seen this billboard up around my sons school and the first time I read it I was very disturbed by it.

  • Zero Party Politics

    Great point… hysterical finish :)

  • Jackie

If this statistic is true, it’s rather shameful and embarrassing! What it says to me is that we should be more responsible before pregnancy, by practicing abstinence or using contraceptives, instead of using abortion as a remedy or solution to unwanted pregnancies.

What’s not okay is being put on blast, as if we’re all just irresponsible, over-sexed savages who kill their young. We should stop them from making a public mockery of us!

  • http://www.SicklyCat.com JohnCByrdIII

I agree, but Republicans make it impossible to teach sex ed in school. We can’t pass out condoms. We can’t talk about fertility windows.

  • keshia

    Less ads about abortion
More ads about practicing safe sex

  • Asya

I am horrified that this kind of ad campaign is being used. It is truly shameless. I was pleasantly surprised to see that you wrote this one, John! It is very well written. Good Job! :)

  • http://www.SicklyCat.com JohnCByrdIII

I never know if I should be honored or humbled by your comments Asya! I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a straight out compliment from you.

  • Fate

First… I am NOT a republican. Second… I DO believe it is unfair to set up a systemically supported impoverization of any people… But… I COMPLETELY agree with the endangered species campaign. I believe that our community is fully under attack… I’m not a big conspiracy guy but I do believe in the reality of evil.

Abortion is only one weapon in this arsenal of genocide. Let me explain, our community’s family structure is so degraded, diseased, and depleted of the steady, consistent male that we can’t absorb the kind of hits others can. Homosexuality, divorce, drugs, and abortion can be absorbed more readily if the family unit is strong and a societal norm. Among Black people it is not. 71% of our children are born to single mothers. Most sociologist will confirm that a top indicator of adult success (by percentage) is being reared in a two parent home.

Also, I don’t feel ANY political party can look out for the needs of our community. They both have pluses and minuses.

  • Jackie

I hear you, John, but we can’t continue to blame Republicans for all our problems…we must try to help anyone we can in our immediate surroundings. Even if sex ed was offered in the schools, the statistics also show that our Black youth aren’t in regular attendance, topping the list of drop-outs, so if taught, how would they get the message? Furthermore, if sex ed isn’t being offered in schools, how is the word about abstinence and contraceptives being passed around to non-Blacks? What’s even more ironic is that the same clinics that perform abortions are usually the same clinics that provide sex ed and contraceptives to those who want them, without cost, and @ low cost. This issue, in my opinion, is much deeper than it seems on the surface. It’s more an issue of valuing, loving and respecting oneself, and then being able to express the same toward others. So many of us don’t love, respect or value ourselves, individually or collectively.

  • Pamela

Well my first thought was in reference to the unnecessary and crass reference to the vagina. It’s offensive and not needed to grab the reader’s attention as the topic in & of itself is eye catching on its own. My second thought is that God did not mince words in the Bible and I’m comfortable with following His word. Thirdly, its unfortunate that there are so many African American women who see this as their only option. As Christians we should look into ways to ways to motivate others to live their lives in a godly fashion, and it starts with me..letting my light shine thru all of my words & deeds.

  • Jackie

I totally agree with you, Fate, abortion is a very powerful weapon, amongst others, that endangers our community. However, this campaign was not designed in any way to help us wake up and make a change, but instead to make a public spectacle and mockery of us. We must reach out and help one another.

  • Fate

Have you looked at the site? I didn’t feel that way at all when I read up on them…

  • Jackie

I haven’t seen their site, but their billboard campaign, however, isn’t helping anybody, except to feel angry, ashamed and disgusted. This billboard campaign is HIGHLY ineffective, in my opinion.

  • Brian

It’s a shame that such a serious issue is trivialized to make a point by both the pro and con sides. There’s a division in this country between
one’s rights and what’s right. I’m not going to mandate or try to mandate morality, but when one… lays down to possibly create life, even it that was not the intent, you’ve given up a certain amount of rights when the outcome is quite possibly life being produced. If you don’t think so, what’s being aborted? And if its truly the “woman’s body,” why isn’t her life the one being terminated?

  • Geoff

It takes all kinds and those shouting the loudest are usually the most ignorant…the Right comes up with some really bad shit. This has to rank up there in the top ten. Talk about God giving people the right to make bad decisions…anything the Right stands for, advocates or says is a bad decision…

  • Joshua Stroud

Are you kidding me. This is reality. Not a damn joke. It is a fact that the founder of planned parenthood had an agenda that would euthanize the black population. It is a fact that more black people die from abortion than from anything else bro. Where is Jesse?
-Talk about being hoodwinked and bamboozled. It is a fact that a person dies when an abortion occurs. In 1997 I sat down at a table with a new friend of mine. He thought it absurd that a movie made about one of the most tragic events in our country’s history was maid light of. He suggested that it was an outrage. The movie was Amastad. The friend Wayne Byrd.
-Likewise, it is an outrage that so many people ignore the actual issue. Its about people dying or being killed rather, and not about the liberties of women. One of the augments the democrats made in defense of slavery, was that the slave owner had rights to their property. What an absurd argument, they missed the point completely. Likewise the factual, not simple, issue is that a person dies when an abortion occurs.
-It is appropriate, if one is passionate for them to do all within their legal scope to contend against that which they deem unjust. I believe that killing babies is unjust. Please be tolerant.

PS. Im not a democrat or a republican. Im a Christian, black independent conservative.
    -Just the facts man. http://thatsabortion.com/Abortion%20Facts.htm

    @Geoff: what the….?..

  • Anonymous

If you are conflicted – watch the documentary MAAFA21 – they show JUST THE FACTS and it will certainly anger you ! http://www.maafa21.com

  • http://www.SicklyCat.com JohnCByrdIII

@Anonymous: Seriously, what does that have to do with abortion?

  • Jackie

I realize that this is an old topic of discussion, but just had another thought about it. If conservatives want to save black children from becoming an endangered species, then why are they opposed to healthcare reform? Many Black infants and children suffer needlessly and often die due to lack of or limited access to healthcare…just a thought.

  • Manny

Ok. Pro choice = Pro choice to murder.
