Afro-Latinos: The Forgotten Blacks (VIDEO)

Afro-Latinos: The Forgotten Blacks (VIDEO)

Henry Louis Gates Jr. has released a new documentary series titled Black in Latin America.  This documentary series highlights the history of Blacks in Latin America (including Belize & Haiti).

Blacks in the states have become the face of the African diaspora due to America’s visibility and due to our high density in the entertainment industry, yet we are the minority.

Blacks in the United States have been known for supporting legislation that disproportionally targets Latinos and we fail to realize that the majority of Blacks in the Americas like Hugo Chavez, Sammy Sosa, Tito Trinidad and Zoe Saldana are Latino!

Because of ignorance, idiots like Torii Hunter choose to divide the African diaspora as much as possible.

Watch the below promo for the documentary series.  It’s very enlightening.

Some of my independent research on this can be found here.

You can watch the full episodes here or you can buy them on DVD to watch at home.

    Wow…I didn’t know Hugo Chavez was Afro-Latin. n

Yeah, He often talks about how proud he is of his African Heritage.

  • Laredo

nIt’s interesting to see that they have a latina of OBVIOUS African descent on the cover of Latina.

  • http://www.conservativesuperstar.com Conservative Super Star

The truth is Hugo Chavez is Mullato Sammy Sosa is Black because if he was Latino he wouldn’t need to use skin cream to lighten his skin & were green contacts to try and look Latino. Felix Trinidad & Zoe Saldana are also black. Also the girl on the cover is also of African decedent. Basically just because you speak Spanish doesn’t make you Latino or Hispanic. Also you can look at Rosario Dawson & Lala Vasquez who are also of African decedents. It really isn’t that confusing or complicated. The reason people get shocked when black people speak Spanish is for a reason. If a black person calls them self Latino or Hispanic and people are shocked it is for a reason. I guess the closest way I can compare it to is if you are Chinese and are adopted by a white family. You will learn English and their traits but you still will be Chinese & not Caucasian even if you talk & act Caucasian

  • http://www.facebook.com/SicklyCatMagazine John Calvin Byrd III

I think that you are confusing Culture for Race. Their are Black if you define them by race, but are Latino by culture. I am Black by race, but American by culture. nnSo yes, they are completely justified in calling themselves Latino, they would just be liars if they denied their Blackness.

  • http://www.conservativesuperstar.com Conservative Super Star

Race & culture go together hand & hand. The reason a lot of African dialect & customs were lost was because the plantation owners did not want the slaves to conspire against them. The only customs they inherited where European while some were able to hold only a small tidbit of their past. Many of the foods & dances were influenced by African culture & survive today. nnThe first Plantation owners were not In the New Colonies of America but on Plantation in Hispaniola. Much of the new world from South America, Central America, all the way up to southern parts of North America were conquered by the Spanish & Portuguese. nnLatinos came from Italy and established their presence in the Iberian peninsula. If you look at a old Roman maps they called Spain Roman Hispania If you take Italian and move around the letters you get Latin the language spoke by many of Romans territories. Romantico is derived from Roman and in English is Romance. nnWhen the Spanish invaded the new world they were Spanish and eventually Criollo people meaning the people of Spanish decent but born in the new world. Now if you were born in the new world & not born in Spain you could be discriminated & not given high positions. The Hispanic/Latino was the new name of these people born in the new world that were born in the Americas of Spanish decent. It was just a way to trace your roots to where you were from originally. If you were noble origin many could trace their roots back to Rome in Roman Hispania and they called themselves the Latinos. Eventually it became one Hispanic/Latino but then the new Name became Espana when the Roman Empire fell and people just called themselves Spanish or espanoles. nnExample if y0u say you are Hispanic and you are from the Americas you are saying your ancestors came from Spain & if you said Latino you are saying that your roots go all the way back to Italy. Really Spanish & Italian are super similar languages and if you speak one well then many of the words can be easily identified. nnIf you get a chance I recommend this telenovela if you understand Spanish. La Pola nnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hr_ulcef3_E&feature=related

  • http://www.facebook.com/SicklyCatMagazine John Calvin Byrd III

Very true.nnnThe word Creole was initially used (in Louisiana) to describe anyone of French descent that was born in the new world. It eventually was used to describe those of French & African descent. The word itself changed meaning. Blacks who use that term now to describe themselves focus on the culture of the mixed race group of “Creoles” in Louisiana, NOT the connection to France.nnnLikewise, those who use the term Latino are not focusing on the connection to Spain, but to the Latin American culture.nnnSo our brothers and sisters who exited the slave ships in Latin America are Afro-Latino like we are African American. nnnI HATE the term “African-American” by the way.n

  • http://www.conservativesuperstar.com Conservative Super Star

the word criollo and its Portuguese cognate crioulo are believed to come from the Spanish/Portuguese verb criar, meaning “to breed” or “to raise”. The term came into use in the settlements established by the Portuguese along the West African coast.[citation needed] Originally the term was meant to distinguish the members of any foreign ethnic group who were born and “raised” locally, from those born in the group’s homeland, as well as from persons of mixed ethnic ancestry. Thus, in the Portuguese colonies of Africa, portuguu00eas crioulo was a locally born person of Portuguese descent; in the Americas, negro criollo or negro crioulo was a locally born person of pure black (i.e. African) ancestry; and, in Spanish colonies, an espau00f1ol criollo was an ethnic Spaniard who had been born in the colonies, as opposed to an espau00f1ol peninsular born in Spain. nhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criollo_people

The reason Hugo Chavez & Tego Calderon are admired is because they are true to their roots and don’t BS people.

  • http://www.conservativesuperstar.com Conservative Super Star

Well ask yourself what does Latino mean? Well in the old colonial days it wasn’t Afro Latino but Negro Latino meaning Latinized black. What happen was a priest actually wrote a letter to the King of Spain requesting slaves from Africa because they could handle harder work comapired to the native Americans, so Spain imported blacks to teach them the language and the cultural ways of the Spanish so they could teach & control new slaves imported to the new world. nhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_ladino

  • http://www.conservativesuperstar.com Conservative Super Star

Example if you ask a Dominican if they are African they will usually deny it and say they are Latino. Now if you ask them how they will say they are mixed and that is why they are not like African Americans. Now the honest truth is that most African Americans are mixed and are not pure African. Examples Barack Obama, Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams, Beyonce Knowles Carter, Derek Jeter, Charles Barkely, Snoop Dogg & the list is endless. They all have Caucasian in them and majority African Americans are mixed. Even North Africans are mixed. To find pure Africans you would have to go to Africa however parts of North Africa and costal regions have a lot of mixture. Example Morraco, Libya, & Somalia

  • http://www.conservativesuperstar.com Conservative Super Star

African American just means you are African born in America. However their is another more correct term used in Latin America for example Brasil & Colombia Afrodescendente This is a very nice song as well. nnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0wnK89L15Q&feature=related

  • http://profiles.google.com/johncbyrdiii John Byrd

I just think that it’s disrespectful for us to have to qualify our citizenship. Why aren’t White people called European-Americans? They are just “American”.

  • http://www.conservativesuperstar.com Conservative Super Star

Anyone can say American & that is it if they are from America north, central or south. However people always ask more than just that as we all know. Oh really you are American what part. People are information gatherers who constantly ask questions to gain knowledge about an individual. For example if a daughter brought home a boyfriend the Parents would immediately question the boyfriend to find out everything about that person & whether they feel it is a right fit for their daughter. Now we all know ultimately it is the daughters choice however, you want the parents blessing no matter what race you belong to . nnin the old days no matter where you are from if you entered a village people wanted to know who is this person. Are they a threat to our village. Where do they come from. What are they up to? nIf they didn’t gather this information about this stranger then they could be missing vital information that could alert the village of an impending attack.

Sammy Sosa is Black and Latino…He is of the Black (African desc.) Race and born in the Dominican Republic ( a Latin American Country)…. you can be Black and Latino, Hispanic, or Spanish. Black is a Race Category and Latino and Spanish, are Nationality Categories..Latino meaning a person born in a Latin American Country(North, S, and Central America , and the Islands of the Caribbean) or Spanish which is a person born in Spain or Spanish territory), and Hispanic is the broader term for people that SPEAK Spanish and is a (a Culture or Ethnic category)…But a Spanish speaking person can be Latino Or Hispanic….confusing?….The reason why people are confused in this day and age about A PERSON OF COLOR speaking another language besides english is Ignorant….and people of African Descent in other countries that are ashamed of their heritage are victims of slavery, colonization, and the false illusion of “Racial Democracy” in their country of origin…Race and culture may go hand in hand BUT they are not one in the same…. I am happy to see that people are having discussions about Blacks in latin america because there is a great Diaspora out there to connect with one another and a Civil Rights movement that needs to happen for Black Latinos…nn

Well if that were the case then why are the Haitians not Latinos since they are from Latin America & the Dominicans are very racist towards them calling them Negros and treating them like slaves. Denying a Haitian a baseball contract because he is not Dominican. I mean he is as dark as Sammy Sosa or Alfonso Soriano or David Ortiz or Vladmir Guerro or Pedro Martinez or Carlos Delgado or Jose Contreas but has a Latinized French Name & not a Latinized Spanish name and he also lives in Latin America. Angel Luis Joseph Here is his story. nhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zubBxJsqdlIn Even the lady in the interview laughed because the Dominicans didn’t use Rubia correctly. Also this is exactly what is causing the rift between African Americans and Latinos. Dominicans look down on African Americans which is ignorant and stupid since the same thing happen in both places.

One not all Latinos are mixed. You hear all Latinos are mixed and not a race. Its ok to have some mixuture in you but to say they are all mixed is a lie. Usually Spanish or Italian, Portuguese people.

u00a0Latin is a Lenguage that originated in Europe Italy to be precise. This is why Latinos have European traits & share similar genetic features. • Pumpkin22

You are wrong. Hispanic is a label given to people from spanish speaking countries because the U.S. LOVES giving people labels. That’s why you hear people say they never knew about racism until they came to America! White black OR brown..Ive heard it said by all! That is why African Americans call themselves African Americans. White Americans never allowed them to assimilate and create one American culture. Btw when have you heard white people say I’m Anglo American? lmao Why separate yourselves and give into racist antiquated ideologies instead of embracing new ones like multiracial ism?u00a0 That’s why people come here and have chinatown, little italy etc.. In Latin America people know they are black. They are more in touch with Africa than people here. Have you heard rumba, bomba, and palo?u00a0 Have you seen the foods eaten by “hispanics?”u00a0 Even some of our words are African as well as some of our religion!u00a0 Like in the documentary Black in America.. a black american will say he is black first then American while a Cuban will say he is a Cuban who happens to be black! We are not in denial, well at least not all of us lol There is no one drop rule in Latin America or the rest of the world btw. Mariah Carey might be considered black in America but that’s it! You are what you look. Latin America has alot of racism and prejudice but at the end of the day a black/white/chinese/indian/ will go home and eat rice and beans and watch a novela and act the same exact way as everyone else in their country. That is a bond that is greater than color I’m sorry to disappoint you by saying. Sadly in America people are not willing to do this. The only time we even slightly unite is when there is some sort of tragedy. African’s sold slaves because they weren’t from their tribes!! It wasn’t about color.. Also, if you did so much research you would have noticed that the Spaniards and Portuguese frequently had children with slaves and depending on how they looked too them in as their own children..not as the house slave like in America. This created a mixed society in many countries. Just because you look black doesn’t mean you’re fully black and just because you look white doesn’ mean you’re fully white. That being said, they prefer to identify with their culture. It’s embarrassing to have a President who was raised by a white family say he is only Black.. but that’s how it is here. Black people embrace the racist one drop rule instead of accepting almost everyone in the world is mixed even the white people with blue eyes sooo is everyone black? If that’s the case then can’t we just accept everyone and live in harmony without so many labels and names?nnBTW the reason alot of Dominicans are in such denial is because alot of the ones you hear saying ridiculous things like “im not black” are uneducated. They have been brainwashed for years. Haiti took over most of D.R. and killed many of the white spanish families and tried to impose french and their lifestyle on the Dominicans who were very influenced by Spain. This caused alot of resentment which still exists to this day. Talk to more educated Dominicans and you will see many are proud of their multiracial identify and acknowledge the many contributions Africans have made to the Dominican culture. Sammy Sosa might have money but that does not make him educated. Like Michaelu00a0 Jackson he has a problem deep inside..wanting to be something he’s not. They just took it too far..nnIn closing..leave “latinos” alone. Btw they don’t even know they are latinos!! They are Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Colombians etc.. they identify with their culture and love being who they are. Nothing is perfect and prejudice and ignorance exists everywhere but embracing something like culture creates unity and peace. Even Europeans are French who happen to be black or British who happen to be black. Let’s join the world and be Americans who happen to be whatever..

  • Pumpkin22

um no..Tego is admired because he is talented and loves Puerto Rico and latinos in general. Hugo Chavez is admired bc he didn’t let the rich win this time.. It has nothing to do with color.u00a0u00a0

It funny how you mention Novelas yet when you look on tv you don’t see to many afro Latinos in them do you.u00a0Obviously because they aren’t really considered latin in the true sense of the form. I mean people pretend to be who they are not however no matter where you are society will be sure to let you know who they think you really are. Remember everyone respects a person who is real & doesn’t like people who are fake or try to be someone who they are not. It is like when a white guy to acts like a black guy or a black guy acts like a white guy. People view it as unauthentic. Many people in America didn’t even realize more Africans were sent to Latin America then the United States. u00a0At the end of the day you are what you are.nnnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK4I16eom2s&feature=player_embedded

Oh really the bond is greater than color. Please racism exist in Latin America & is just as bad or maybe worse than the United States. It is just reality. Yes, I lived in London for 2 years and I am well aware that their are Black English people however, their is racism their as well. This is what I call the Tribe similarity recognition that is in usu00a0instinctively. People recognize people who have their traits and similarities & associate with them & shun outsiders naturally. Even if that person maybe a good person they judge the person first on looks alone first to identify if they are an outsider or not. You can see it today in groups or gangs & even in prisons where people of the same races stay together and fight with each other against other races.u00a0nnI will also add more examples of racism in Latin America. Trust me when I say this. We are all Latino thing is not true, and people don’t consider Africans, indigenous, or Asians or even some Caucasians as Latinos but consider them gringos. However Caucasians just have an easier time being accepted compared to other races. I will start to add some videos on this subject. I will even add racism in Europe just to make sure people know the real truth and not the Kumbaya fake stuff you talk about Pumpkin22nnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33i56_a5yhI&feature=feedrec_grec_indexu00a0

As far as Dominicans being proud of beingu00a0multiculturalu00a0they are super racist towards the Haitians. 2nd the Tainos or indigenous were virtually slaughtered by the Spanish or died of disease brought by Europeans. 3rd like you said most of the Spanish fled and very little Spanish stayed and many don’t have Spanish in them they just claim it or would rather be in denial.u00a0nnThis was the census in 1574 on the Island of Hispaniola Another thing only 10% claim to be black on the island on the census which is totally false because many deny their black ancestry. I mean it was the slave capital of the world & it wasn’t the Haitians that made Dominicans black the truth is they were brought by the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch & English & that is why they are black.u00a0nnWhy claim one white ancestor that probably raped some ancestor when 85% of a person is of African Ancestry. I would think they would be more ashamed of the violation of a human being then they would of black Ancestry. However, humans can be funny sometimes. Also I mean if you use Relaxer, to straighten your hair you probably not Spanish or have very little Spanish or Taino in you that it is insignificant amount it really pathetic to even mention it unless you wanted to be looked at crazy by people. Like they say the truth hurts but it will set you free as well.u00a0In 1574, a census taken of the Greater Antilles, reported 1,000 Spaniards and 12,000 African slaves on HispaniolaSource Wikipedia – Hispaniolau00a0Struggling with racism in the Dominican Republic 01-08-2008http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7WpPANS_AU&playnext=1&list=PL4DC6D5C4EB9B3E0E

Wow 2 different ways of thinking. When you ask a person who is of Mexican Ancestry they say they Are Mexican-American not just American. Many of the places in the Southwest like San Antonio, Los Angeles, Las Vegas,u00a0San Francisco, San Diego, Santa Clara, and many states had Spanish citizens who then became Mexican citizens & were already in the United States.u00a0nSome can trace their ancestry to Spain some to indigenous & some maybe a Mestizo Spanish Indian. It is funny how White America says these people are invading when they were already here and established many cities and states. This is why many speak Spanish & not English because places like New Mexico had large Hispanic/Latino populations Many are proud of their culture and when a White person tells them they are just American they say I am Mexican American.u00a0nnMany think well they love Mexico so much why not go back, what many people don’t understand is that much of the southwest states were part of Mexico. California, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, Las Vegas, Colorado, which is another word for red in Spanish. Why do u think the Gulf is called the Gulf of Mexico. Even Florida was named by the Spanish and many Spanish people mostly Cubans live in Miami which is a city with a huge Hispanic/Latino population.u00a0nnIt is weird how many African Americans just want to be called Americans while many Mexicans want to be called Mexican Americans. Really both continents is America not just the United States & White Americans aren’t even the true Americans it is the indigenous people who are the true Americans. Just look at the history and you will read true history not the white washed history you have been taught.u00a0

The Definition of HispanicnIt is important to understand that the definition of Hispanic varies widely depending upon the source you use. Some say that “Hispanic” refers to race, but this is not true. Hispanic defines a region of origin, not a person’s race.nThe U.S. Census Bureau also concurs that Hispanic refers to region, not race, and uses the term to describe any person, regardless of race, creed, or color, whose origins are Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or of some other Hispanic origin. In fact, areas conquered by the Spaniards were considered part of a region originally called Hispania.nImportant Points to RemembernnnnnImportant Points to RemembernThe difference between Latino and Hispanic: nLatino generally refers to countries (or cultures) that were once under Roman rule. This includes Italy, France, Spain, etc. Brazilians are considered to be Latino, but are not considered to be Hispanic.nHispanic u00a0describes cultures or countries that were once under Spanish rule (Mexico, Central America, and most South America where Spanish is the primary language).nIn American-English, Latino has come to be equated with Hispanic and are often used interchangeably without offense.

Bringing up the “look” thing.. Spaniards and Italians ..are European meaning they are white also known as European latins …and because of inter racial mixing there is no typical look for a latino or Hispanics
