Bachmann Believes African Slaves Loved Their Southern Masters

~Justin Rosario

One of the more interesting tidbits to be discussed about GOP presidential front-runner Michelle Bachmann in the current issue of the New Yorker is that one of the books she kept listed on her website as a “must read” was a biography of Robert E. Lee by J. Steven Wilkins. Wilkins is a revisionist historian that seeks to downplay or even glorify the Souths’ tradition of slavery. From the book:

Slavery, as it operated in the pervasively Christian society which was the old South, was not an adversarial relationship founded upon racial animosity. In fact, it bred on the whole, not contempt, but, over time, mutual respect. This produced a mutual esteem of the sort that always results when men give themselves to a common cause. The credit for this startling reality must go to the Christian faith. . . The unity and companionship that existed between the races in the South prior to the war was the fruit of a common faith.

Got that? Because Africans were forcibly converted to Christianity, they didn’t mind being slaves at all but rather worked extra hard to enrich their white owners. For Jesus.

This is the rising star of the GOP. If you are even contemplating voting for this woman, you are a goddamn idiot.

    Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

  • OMG

Take one paragraph from an entire book and paste it as her view?u00a0 That’s just plain crazy.n

  • Deane

Is she eating Keneration, Peddigree or Cadillac? I know she’s an IAM eater!

  • Mike M.

    A truly stupid woman.

  • Laura Smith

    bat shit crazy…

  • Tarn

why doesn’t this suprise me? No wonder white supremacists love this woman…

  • Eric R.

I haven’t had time to read the article, but there were -some- slaves who did actually love their masters. A lot of slaves were “brainwashed” by their masters who told them that it was God’s will that they were slaves (exodus of course). The problem becomes when we generalize this and use this as an argument to go back to the state’s right’s of the 1800′s.

  • Felix Cordero

Erick get real, please. Speaking positively and defending the point of view of “some hypothetical fairytaleu201d and u201cloved by his slaves masteru201d is a blatant insult to all simple common sense, human reason, dignity and to humanity at large. B…achmann is a woman who agreed with the statement that black people were better during the time of slavery than under President Obama, because “slave families stayed together”. No wonder she supports making middle class America slaves to corporations. If I am not careful the rich and powerful will have me hating the oppressed and loving the people doing the oppression. In other words when you kidnap a family and separate them for your own profit it’s an act of Christian charity? I wonder how she would feel if she was a slave? I am guessing she would automatically want to be the slave owner. Remember karma might put you in a situation were you will regret your words. Like being a woman as my great-grandmother when she was rapped by her white master my great-grandfather? Blaming that The State as per all u201cbig governmentu201d is inherently evil is propaganda created by white supremacists KKK. The plantation and slave owners were THE STATE. The State WAS A TOOL of white supremacists plantation and slave owners responsible for lot of slaves being “brainwashed by white supremacy laws” Their white supremacists masters in charge of the States used written laws that told slaves that it was God’s will that they were slaves. The pseudo-love the slaves might have felt is now scientifically known as Helsinki Syndrome a very well known physiological term used to describe a real paradoxical psychological phenomenon. I wonder how you would feel if you where a slave and see your children and family sold for profit?

Good God Almighty – I hope this is satire!

  • Peace and Unity

no, unfort. not, and that is the OPINION of a lot of IGNORANT whites, they should get a second opinion, ya know, maybe from a black person.nnsee, they (the ignorant) believe that when the blacks were slaves they all had a meal, work, etc.. like it was just great, and now the poor black people cant find work, housing, etc… THEY fail to see their own ROLE in that

  • Firehousebrass

Sadly there are far too many who do believe her entire spiel and see absolutely nothing wrong with a thing she says. It’s people like her who got this Nation into the mess it’s in and it’s the same narrow minded idiots that are doing their damnedest to make sure we understand that it isn’t all their fault!

Bachmann has to be mentally ill..She obviously lives in a different world than we do….Racism and hate has fried the one brain cell she had left……

  • Junee

I’m not sure who scares me more, her or Palin.

  • JoshL

    She is absolutely crazy.

  • Chico

    crazy jesus people

  • C Anderson

    What the fuzz

  • MAG

This woman is not going to get any of the minority vote. Or the sane person vote.

  • Z Nealy

Wow…the writer is absolutely right “If you are even contemplating voting for this woman, you are a goddamn idiot.” Mind you this woman doesn’t even know how to pronounce chutzpah -u00a0http://www.youtube.com/watu200bch?v=9_mWlXvKnq8

  • Gahagan

and people want her to be the next president?

  • Miya

Nothing shocks me anymore. Lord, please save us from these lunatics! SMH

  • Erk

    “Is she sick boss?”

  • Paula

I am speechless…I don’t know what to say on this…

  • Grinner

This woman can not be allowed anywhere NEAR the Presidency of the United States!! Did she hide all of her Crazy when she was running for elected office the first time?!? I Rebuke Her!!

  • EvelynM

In the name of Jesus! Lord have mercy these white folks r so twisted ! Please pray for our President

  • K Will

Bachmann spew the lies that has been taught to her. She is just a “reflection” of our society when it comes to telling the “true” history of slavery in this country. Most Americans have this ROMANTICIZED view of slavery. Our “poor” President has his hands full. Yes Evelyn, I do pray for him – all the time.

  • Ginger

Not to start a flame war, BUT. When I clicked the link I expected some statement from her to prompt that headline. It is a stretch and quite irresponsible to draw that conclusion because one of her favorite books is a bio of Robert E. Lee that out out probably 600 pages or so has 2 sentences that are bigoted (they are digging deep there). I haven’t read enough about her to draw a conclusion one way or another, but this article is nothing but a flame in itself, but not a conclusion a respected journalist would come up with. But carry on.

  • KimberleyHoch

She’s a nut. And she did make some statement – or agree to one someone else made – about how the families of slaves were better off because they were together, unlike modern African American families. No generalities there, eh?

  • Heather

The slave owners wanted their slaves to love them in order to protect their property. “They must love, respect and trust only us.” by Willie Lynch:http://www.duboislc.org/htu200bml/WillieLynch.html

  • Sailorferrets

Nope, she fully advocates everything in that entire book. Promise.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000298291404 Tanya Bliss

This article is heavily biased and largely inaccurate… she says this book is a must read, but that doesn’t make the quote from the book words that she can be quoted for.nScaremongering aside, I wouldn’t vote for a fundy x-tian anyways.u00a0 The whole trying to “cure” homosexuality thing puts this woman squarely into the fundamental freak category.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=13705308 Matt Cumings

Sadly, these are the same demographic.

  • James

I saw this magazine cover several times the day it came out and thought to myself,”This chick is crazy as a loon”

  • M Brown

    Try her words for crazy.

  • Spinkat

Are you suggesting that Bachmann must share this view?! How outrageous! As one of the other commenters suggested: “This is a stretch.”nIn fact, I am a Canadian. We are trying to figure out a way to accomplish the greatest engineering feat in history: Sawing through our southern border and then blasting deep underground to loosen this country from N. America. Then we will use monstrous floats and propel the country so that we can be situated beside northern Europe. If we can’t do this and Devil Eyes becomes Prez, we all plan to pick a day and a specific time and each one of us will then stick our head betwixt our asses and kiss ourselves goodbye.

  • PammyG

“one of the books she kept listed on her website as a u201cmust readu201d … I would say if she promotes it that much it is something that she strongly believes in, but be naive if you want.

  • PammyG

Plain and simple, I like that. =)

  • Alejandro Galle

Oh, Joy. Some how I am not surprised and should keep her close cuz this crazy woman would probably be one to be super conservative and go back to those days. God help us all who are not white. If I were crazy, psycho, and mad I would probably have the same evil smile she smirks.
