We live in a world where all people are judged based the actions of the worst among them. All athletes are judged based on the actions of those who brutally fight dogs or by those who rape women. All football coaches are judged based on the actions of those who rape children. All Texans are judged based on the actions of a single war criminal. All Christians are judged based on the actions of Timothy McVeigh or on the actions of some in the Catholic clergy. No? That’s not the world we live in?
Tell that to the millions of Muslims that are American citizens, many of whom born and raised. Tell that to the millions of Muslim people who pay taxes, who employ people, who spend their hard-earned money in American businesses. Tell that to the American Muslims who fight for their country. Tell that to the American Muslims who died in the 9/11 attacks. Every day, these loyal American Muslims have to fight the stereotype that all Muslims are out to destroy the Western world. They are forced off airplanes because fellow passengers are uncomfortable with their dress. They are harassed by otherwise law-abiding citizens…just because 19 hijackers (the tiniest fraction of the world’s 1.57 billion Muslim population) attacked our country. It’s like blaming all drivers because of one drunk who kills. Yes, there are more drunk drivers, but it’s far from the majority of those on the road.
TLC (The Learning Channel), a division of Discover Communications, has done something laudable. They created a reality show based in Dearborn, MI, a city that is home to the country’s largest Muslim population. The show is called “All-American Muslim” and it follows the lives of several very normal American people, who happen to pray, and sometimes dress, differently than most Americans. They are entrepreneurs. They speak perfect English. They love their country. It’s the only one they have. After all, there’s nothing like knowledge to overcome education and fear.
Well, several Americans refuse to go that far. The Florida Family Association sent out this email to its followers:
“All-American Muslim is propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda’s clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values”
The Florida Family Association is also very upset with the show, Degrassi, for showing a lesbian/transgender relationship. They even show us lots of pictures of the couple kissing. Strange…but I digress.
The FFA’s pressure has worked on at least one major advertiser, Lowe’s Home Improvement Store, the nation’s second largest. In an email to the FFA, Lowe’s said:
“While we continue to advertise on various cable networks, including TLC, there are certain programs that do not meet Lowe’s advertising guidelines, including the show you brought to our attention. Lowe’s will no longer be advertising on that program.”
They also included this:
If I (Andrew) can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to call 1-866-900-4650, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. You may also contact us by mailing your correspondence to Lowe’s Companies, Mail Code CON8, 1605 Curtis Bridge Rd., Wilkesboro, North Carolina 28697.
I suggest that we contact Andrew and Lowe’s by phone, email and snail mail. Hate is not a value American people should tolerate. I’m sure the cast of “All-American Muslim” would agree.
Below is a promo for All-American Muslim.
